The Y-chromosome. It is what makes all babies male and is a record of
our ancestry carried with us for the next generation to keep.

We inherit a Y-chromosome from our father, who in turn received his from his father and so on.

In fact, it can remain unchanged for many generations, so you will likely have the exact same Y-chromosome as your g-g-g-g-g-g-grandfather. You will also often share the same surname as it is passed down the very same line (which is why it is so useful to genealogists!)

The path of the Y-Chromosome as it is passed from father to son

In recent years, advances in genome research have enabled the cost of DNA testing to come well within the reach of genealogists. Given the amount of time and expense that most genealogists have devoted to their research, using DNA to break through brick walls is an excellent solution.

Y-DNA testing is at its most powerful when used with the existing paper
records in trying to prove (or disprove) a theory or connection between two males with the same or similar surname. This can also be expanded to compare many males with the same surname as part of a Surname Project. If you need to get up to speed, go ahead and visit our Tutorial and Glossary pages.

DNA Heritage offers a fully calibrated 43-marker Y-chromosome test.

The markers used are all published in recent scientific articles and deemed highly useful for genealogical work. Because the markers we test for overlap those in use by other testing companies (e.g. all of FTDNA's 12 and 25-marker tests, 32 of FTDNA's 37-marker test and all of Relative Genetics markers) this provides many more groups and individuals with which to match your results against - many of whom have already inputted their results into Ybase.

We feel that our excellent service, advice, very competitive prices and Oracle (our online customer resource) makes DNA Heritage the ideal choice.

On receipt of your order, we'll send out a sample collection kit along with full instructions of how to collect a painless cheek swab*.

Once your sample is returned to us, we set about extracting, amplifying and analysing your DNA. Our testing laboratory follows strict guidelines and protocols for DNA analysis, ensuring your sample is kept anonymous. Testing is to the highest standard and your DNA is destroyed after use.

Thousands of mitochondria exist within each cell. Each one has a small circular section of mtDNA which is maternally inheritedResults of your test will be sent to you within 3 and a half weeks of receipt of your sample if sent directly to our representative in Utah where samples are transported to the lab in Salt Lake City, Utah on a daily basis.

European customers can still return their samples to the UK for check-in although this will add several extra days to the overall time and thus we recommend returning samples to Utah too via Airmail. You'll also receive a clear interpretation of the results.

You can check the progress of your sample and view your results via Oracle, our on-line customer database - we'll give you your access codes when you place your order.

Note: We do not charge an extra 'project management' fee and there
are no fees for 'upgrading' from a single test to a surname project.
